Vibunzi -- Corn

VIBUNZI (Vi-bun-zi)

Ears of Corn

The kernels on the corn represent the children, hence a family uses as many ears of corn as it has children. Each ear of corn represent the produce of the stalk and the potential of offspring to reproduce, hence to insure immortality of a people and nation.

Even household with no children uses the ears to symbolize the African concept of social parenting.

Emphasis is thus placed on the children as they represent the hope of the future.

"It takes  a whole village to raise a child."
