Kwanzaa Symbols

Like any other important holidays, Kwanzaa has its special symbols. These symbols are instructional in that they represent and reinforce the basic principles and concepts of Kwanzaa.

They are:

  • Mkeka
  • Kinara (candle holder)
  • Mishumaa Saba (7 candles, 3 red, 3 green, 1 black)
  • Mazao (fruit and vegetables represented by the bowl which holds them)
  • Vibunzi (ears of corn)
  • Zawadi (gifts usually Afro-centric in nature)
  • Kikombe Cha Umoja (Cup of Unity)

The Karamu ( the Feast) is the centerpiece of the celebration. This is the time when families and communities come together to celebrate the fruits of their labors.
